As much as I believe that the UN is about as useful as teets on a boar, I thought that as weak as they were, the latest sanctions coming out of that august body were at least something.
I mean with all of the violations recently by N Korea regarding their nuclear program and missile launches-it was heartning to hear that when it is believed that ships leaving N Korea have as cargo; nuclear material, missiles or missile components they could be boarded and checked out to make sure that there were no such things onboard.
I was reading the latest post by the AP regarding the USS McCain and discovered that the UN sanctions are worded such that N. Korean ships can only be boarded with the permission of N. Korea.
"The Security Council resolution calls on all 192 U.N. member states to inspect vessels on the high seas "if they have information that provides reasonable grounds to believe that the cargo" contains banned weapons or material to make them, and if approval is given by the country whose flag the ship sails under." Once again the point is proven that the UN hasn't got a clue. Give me a break. To find out if someone you believe is involved in activity that has been deemed against the law you have to ask for their permission to see if they are. Yeah sure; I'm sure that the good folks in the N. Korean government would say: go ahead you didn't even need to ask.
By the way, in a case where the US believes that someone is doing things that could lead to the death of our citizens or citizens of countries we have pledged to protect, when is it that we need to ask for permission or cover from any external body to do so. I am so tired of the mantra that we need to have some sort of cover from an external governing body so that "the world" won't get mad at us...No matter what we do, it has been shown over and over again that many in the world hate us no matter what we do. It is about time that our leaders grow a set and start doing things that yes, unilaterally work for our benefit. For those that do not like it--get over it--when you have grown to the same level of benefit to the world in prosperity and strength that the US has at the moment, maybe we will listen. If we keep going at the pace we are right now that day will likely come sooner rather than later. Much to my displeasure.
